A Thought from Under the Pink Hat

What a Wonderful Arrangement

We spend our childhood being told to enjoy ourselves because these are the best years of our lives.

A sepia still life with a speckled mug.

We spend our childhood being told to enjoy ourselves because these are the best years of our lives.

Then we grow up and are told to work hard so that one day we can enjoy ourselves again.

How wonderfully organised.

We spend most of our time earning enough money to afford a home we barely see, buying things we rarely use, and saving for a future we assume will patiently wait for us.

We celebrate being busy. We admire people who never stop. We even feel guilty for sitting down without having achieved something first.

And somewhere along the way, having a life became another thing on the to-do list.

Perhaps the strangest part is that we call all of this success.

I wonder who decided that.

And whether they ever had time to enjoy theirs.
