About AS visible

Different minds. Brilliantly human.

Not everyone who has something to say finds it easy to make themselves heard.

AS visible is a space for different ways of thinking, feeling, communicating and experiencing the world. We explore the people, ideas and abilities too often overlooked - not because they have less to offer, but because their strengths aren’t always immediately visible.

Through thoughtful reflections, practical resources, original stories and a little dry humour, we encourage a different way of seeing people.

Being noticed shouldn’t depend on being the loudest person in the room.

Our philosophy

The trouble with fitting in

We all know the story of the ugly duckling.

An awkward little creature eventually becomes a beautiful swan. Everyone admires it. A happy ending, apparently.

But there's something rather peculiar about the story.

A swan. Judged for being a terrible duck.

A curious oversight.

It wasn't a particularly unsuccessful duck. It wasn't a duck at all.

Yet it was judged against expectations that had very little to do with what it actually was.

We do something similar with people.

We admire individuality, provided it arrives in a form we recognise. We celebrate confidence, but sometimes overlook different ways of thinking, communicating or contributing.

And occasionally, we become so occupied with what someone isn't that we fail to see who they are.

AS visible isn't about changing people until they fit our expectations.

We don't need everyone to become quieter. We need to become better at hearing everyone.

It's about questioning the expectations themselves.

The cygnet didn't need to become beautiful. It needed to be seen for what it already was.

You matter. Full stop. You always did.

Behind AS visible

I was always there. Just not always seen.

I was the child who listened, followed instructions and rarely caused trouble.

A good child, apparently.

Which is a rather convenient description. It tells you how easy someone was to manage, but not necessarily much about who they were.

I had my own thoughts, ideas, dreams, feelings, opinions and ambitions. I simply wasn't always the person announcing them.

For a while, I thought perhaps I needed to become more confident in the way other people expected.

Eventually, I began questioning the expectation instead.

That question became part of the thinking behind AS visible.

Not because everyone should be quiet. Not because confidence is a bad thing. And certainly not because being overlooked automatically makes someone extraordinary.

But because being visible, being noticed and being truly seen are three very different things.

What you’ll find here

Ideas are interesting. What we do with them matters rather more.

AS visible brings together thoughtful writing, poetry, original stories, practical resources and the occasional unnecessary observation.

From exploring meaningful play and connection to making classroom planning more manageable, the aim is the same: to question assumptions and create things that are genuinely useful.
